The First Montessori Landschool is an 86-acre mountain retreat located in Summerville, Georgia, just 80 miles northwest from our Atlanta campus (1 ½ hour drive). It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Trail and abuts section 7 of the Pinhoti Trail. Pinhoti translates to “wild turkey.” Nature abounds on this property. In the morning, deer, wild turkey, geese and beaver can be seen down by the three-acre pond. In the mountains, snakes and salamanders can be found. The pastures contain hawks and rabbits, and one can find crayfish and newts in the spring-fed creek.

The Landschool property is available for rent. Please contactTerry Thompson at First Montessori School at 404-252-3910 for more information.

The facilities on the Landschool property consist of the following:

Camp Building:
The camp building is comprised of 5,000 square feet over four main rooms. Separate bunk rooms for boys and girls (with 25 beds each) are located on opposite sides of the building. Connected to each bunk room is a bathroom with multiple shower stalls, toilets and sinks. Sinks and toilets have ADA accessibility. There is a commercial kitchen for food prep, and a 3,000-square-foot common room that features a piano, ping pong table, weaving loom, and a large wood-burning fire place. The Camp Building has central gas heat and limited cooling via portable air conditioners which can be placed in the bunk rooms.

Covered Play Area:
The 3,000-square-foot covered play area has a concrete floor. It serves as a common meeting place when the heat of the day proves to be too much or during the occasional rain storm. Court games can also be played on the hard surface.

Three-Acre Pond:
On the other side of Popular Springs Road, approximately a 2,000-foot walk from the Camp Building, is our small lake, complete with a family of beavers. One can see the beaver lodge, as well as an occasional tree felled by them. The pond also has fish, frogs, turtles and geese. The water has been tested and is clean, but we do not advise swimming in the pond.

Hiking Trails:
There are three marked trails on the Landschool property.

Green: A 30-minute easy hike. It starts from above the Camp Building, loops around and connects with the spring. It then follows down with the spring-fed creek and exits by the pump house.

Blue: The Blue Trail splits off of the Green Trail approximately 10 minutes in. It bears to the left and connects to the Pinhoti Trail. From here, one can hike for days on a professionally maintained trail. See the Section 7 map  on the website www.georgiapinhoti.org for more information. This trail is also an easy hike.

Red: A 30-minute easy hike.
