Each year, First Montessori produces a student-performed Opera, featuring the singing talents of all Elementary students in both individual and group roles. The theme of the Opera is often tied to classroom studies and/or to current events; for example, in 2007, the Opera’s theme, Harlequin, was set in Italy to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of Montessori Education, which has Italian roots.
The school’s Music Director works with students in preparation for the Opera performance by instructing them in the appropriate songs, dances and dramatic movements. Costumes are often hand-made by parent volunteers. The Opera’s backdrop and props are researched and made by the students, under the guidance of the Art Teacher.
Music Instruction
The music specialist provides instruction and experiences with rhythm, playing in a group, developing the ear, instruments and reading music. The music program also features:
- Small group lessons related to subject matter and/or in-depth experiences of an aspect of music
- Music history lessons for Middle School students
- Suzuki piano and violin after school as a part of Enrichment
- Assistance to teachers at all levels
First Montessori began the Suzuki Strings Program as part of the Upper Elementary Class curriculum in 2002. All Upper Elementary students are given weekly instruction in violin (for beginning students) by trained teachers in the Suzuki method. Weekly group lessons are also given. Sixth year students may choose to continue with violin or begin Suzuki group piano instruction. FMSA anticipates offering other instrument choices via the Suzuki method as the program continues to expand.
Two concerts are given by the Upper Elementary students each year. In addition, the students will typically travel to a nearby retirement home each spring to visit with residents and play some selections from their studies.
